Deepak's most recent film, Witness, delves deeply into the difficulties manual scavengers confront even as the nation continues to see deaths in sewers despite a ban on the practise in 2013.
The story of the movie, which was written by Muthuvel and JP Sanakya, centres on a woman who works in sanitation and her son who is a manual scavenger.
Rohini portrays the mother who fights for justice for her son who died while clearing sewers. In the film, the system plays the antagonist.
Witness is a difficult movie to watch since it examines the difficulties manual scavengers encounter while either in or growing up in underprivileged areas. Every day is about surviving for them.
Witness Plot
A much stronger narration is necessary for the material. The movie raises issues but doesn't address them.
Other than the fundamental narrative, there was nothing compelling or even remotely fascinating.
Some scenes exist just for the sake of a funny exchange. The substance was intense, but the script was sloppy and poorly written.
Sometimes you can predict what the next line will be, which is supported by the camera and soundtrack.
The story stutters a little bit as a result of its own socioeconomic and political subtext.
